If you want to know how to transcribe something, you’ll have to decide whether you are going to transcribe from a digital recording like an MP3 file or the “old fashioned” way, which would be from microcassette or minicassette.

It’s very difficult to transcribe something if you don’t have the right equipment. Not only that, microcassette transcribers as well as minicassette transcribers can cost as much as $200-$300! Of course, you can continually hit the “rewind” button when you are transcribing if all you have is a standard cassette player! But if you have hours of dictation to transcribe, this can be very time-consuming to say the least.

Transcription equipment comes with a foot pedal which allows you to control playback with your feet (or foot) and this really speeds up transcription time. Learning how to transcribe something gets easier and faster with a little practice.

If you have a digital audio file that you need transcribed, there is a free program called Express Scribe, which I have used for quite some time and which can be downloaded here: Express Scribe In order to use this program, you should purchase a “WAV pedal.” I found one on eBay for about $50.
